Who Am I?

Friday of the Twenty-Fifth Week in Ordinary Time

Read this Gospel passage aloud to the family

Luke 9:18-22 - Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?”  They said in reply, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, ‘One of the ancient prophets has arisen.’”  Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”  Peter said in reply, “The Christ of God.”  He rebuked them and directed them not to tell this to anyone.

He said, “The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.”

“But who do you say that I am?”

(Parent) Read this meditation aloud to the family

In the crowd of voices answering Jesus question, “Who do you say that I am?”, there are a few very important voices—ours.  Jesus isn’t content with simply hearing what the crowd says about Him.  He wants our personal response.  He wants our response to Him as a Person.  What is our personal response to Jesus? Jesus is asking us, “Who do you say that I am?”  The answer we give won’t be exactly the same as anyone else’s—because Jesus comes to each of us in a personal way.  The answer to Jesus’ question isn’t one that comes just from our minds or mouths, but from our hearts.  Can we answer it well now?  Or do we need to spend some more time listening, praying, studying, working, living…with Jesus?  Jesus has a question for us, and it’s the most important question we will ever answer.

As a family, pray a portion of the Rosary together (very short if children are young) reflecting on the Scripture passage above. (Optional: allow a brief time for discussion or questions from children concerning their thoughts and prayer.)

Reminder for Parents: Pier is just meant to be a jumping off point. The real goal is that you pray & eventually use the fruits of your personal prayer as the content of your family’s prayer. Duc in altum.
