Pay Attention

Saturday of the Twenty-Fifth Week in Ordinary Time

Read this Gospel passage aloud to the family

Luke 9:43-45 - While they were all amazed at his every deed, Jesus said to his disciples, “Pay attention to what I am telling you.  The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.”  But they did not understand this saying; its meaning was hidden from them so that they should not understand it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

(Parent) Reread this part a few times aloud

“Pay attention to what I am telling you.  The son of Man is to be handed over to men.”

(Parent) Read this meditation aloud to the family

Try to picture the disciples and Jesus here in the Gospel.  Picture the faces of the excited disciples who, once again, are “amazed” at everything Jesus does.  They are so impressed by His “every deed.”  Now picture Jesus: maybe He’s looking at them.  He understands what is happening.   And then, suddenly, He demands their attention and tells them seriously, “Pay attention to what I am telling you.”  Picture Him looking into their eyes.  Jesus tempers their excitement so that He can tell something very important: “The Son of Man is to be handed over…” Pay attention.  Jesus wants us to know that genuine Christianity involves suffering.  The Resurrection is accomplished by the Cross.

As a family, pray a portion of the Rosary together (very short if children are young) reflecting on the Scripture passage above. (Optional: allow a brief time for discussion or questions from children concerning their thoughts and prayer.)

Reminder for Parents: Pier is just meant to be a jumping off point. The real goal is that you pray & eventually use the fruits of your personal prayer as the content of your family’s prayer. Duc in altum.
