Merciful

Monday of the Second Week of Lent

Read this Gospel passage aloud to the family

Luke 6:36-38 - Jesus said to his disciples: “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

“Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned.  Forgive and you will be forgiven. Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.”

(Parent)  Reread this part a few times aloud

“For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.”

(Parent)  Read this meditation aloud to the family

This Gospel passage is pretty self-explanatory.  Let’s not try to read too much into it.  The same point is repeated throughout: what you give, you’ll get back.  The Gospels weren’t written to give puzzling lessons that we will only solve by being clever.  We will probably be more holy people if our goal in reading the Gospel isn’t to have a fancy interpretation, but to try to take the Gospel at its word.

Here are the areas Jesus mentions specifically in this passage: mercy, judgment, forgiveness, generosity.  With each of these, Jesus promises that the more generous we are in these areas, the more generously we will receive them in return. Let’s each pick one of these areas that we usually succeed in, and thank God for that.  Let’s also each pick one of these areas that we struggle with, ask God to transform us, and try to pick one practical specific way we can practice improving on this struggle over the next twenty-four hours.

As a family, pray a portion of the Rosary together (very short if children are young) reflecting on the Scripture passage above.(Optional: allow a brief time for discussion or questions from children concerning their thoughts and prayer.)

Reminder for Parents: Pier is just meant to be a jumping off point. The real goal is that you pray & eventually use the fruits of your personal prayer as the content of your family’s prayer. Duc in altum.
