Clouded Voice

Second Sunday of Lent (C)

Read this Gospel passage aloud to the family

Luke 9: 28-36  - Jesus took Peter, John, and James and went up the mountain to pray. While he was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white. And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem. Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. As they were about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” But he did not know what he was saying. While he was still speaking, a cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.” After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. They fell silent and did not at that time tell anyone what they had seen.

“This is my chosen Son; listen to Him.”

The Holy Trinity is made up of three Divine Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.  The Second Person of the Holy Trinity, God the Son, is also called the “Word of God.”  It is He who, while remaining God, becomes Man also.  “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14).  We are talking here about Jesus.  Jesus is the Second Person of the Holy Trinity—the Son of God, the Word of God.  So it is no coincidence that God the Father says, “…listen to Him.”

Everything God wanted to say to man, He said in Jesus, the Word.  Jesus is our full revelation.  He shows us God.  We need to become very familiar with Jesus.  To do this, we need to spend time reading the Gospels.  It is also necessary to spend time reading the other parts of Scripture and, if possible, the official teachings of the Church.  The most accessible and important of these is the Catechism of the Catholic Church—particularly the parts directly about Christ.  If we listen to God’s Word in the Gospels we will get to know God better and will come to love Him more.  This is what a lover always does—when someone falls in love they seek to know the one they love more and more, and this new knowledge ever increases their love.  So in prayer consider: How is this time of prayer helping me know and love God better?  And what simple things might I do to enhance my reading of the Gospels so I can know and love God better?

As a family, pray a portion of the Rosary together (very short if children are young) reflecting on the Scripture passage above.(Optional: allow a brief time for discussion or questions from children concerning their thoughts and prayer.)

Reminder for Parents: Pier is just meant to be a jumping off point. The real goal is that you pray & eventually use the fruits of your personal prayer as the content of your family’s prayer. Duc in altum.
