Wisdom’s Works

Friday of the Second Week of Advent

Read this Gospel passage aloud to the family

Matthew 11:16-19Jesus said to the crowds: "To what shall I compare this generation?  It is like children who sit in marketplaces and call to one another, 'We played the flute for you, but you did not dance, we sang a dirge but you did not mourn.' For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they said, 'He is possessed by a demon.' The Son of Man came eating and drinking and they said, 'Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.'  But wisdom is vindicated by her works."

(Parent)  Reread this part a few times aloud

“Wisdom is vindicated by her works.”

Some people are always looking for a way to criticize Christianity.  Jesus highlights this in His own generation when He points out that they disbelieve John because his mission seems too strict, yet then they criticize Jesus because His mission seems too loose.  People have always criticized Christ, and they still do today.  (They criticize His Church quickly and unfairly as well.)  Do not be surprised to hear it.

Christ will always be proved right.  Always.  When we hear the next false claim that Jesus had a wife, or that it doesn’t matter if Jesus really physically rose from the dead, or that the Church is secretly organized for worldly power, or that science disproves Christianity, etc. …don’t be alarmed, don’t be shaken, don’t worry.  Christ will always win.  Pray that our faith stays constant amidst the many misunderstandings and false claims about Christ.

As a family, pray a portion of the Rosary together (very short if children are young) reflecting on the Scripture passage above. (Optional: allow a brief time for discussion or questions from children concerning their thoughts and prayer.)
