Time Vision

Friday of the Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

Read this Gospel passage aloud to the family

Luke 12:54-59 Jesus said to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising in the west you say immediately that it is going to rain--and so it does; and when you notice that the wind is blowing from the south you say that it is going to be hot--and so it is.  You hypocrites!  You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time?
"Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?  If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate, make an effort to settle the matter on the way; otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the constable, and the constable throw you into prison.  I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny."

(Parent) Reread this part a few times aloud

“Why do you not know how to interpret the present time?”

Isn’t this a great question for parents?  Remember, Jesus is upset here with people for being oblivious to something that should be clear to them.  We must be aware of the times that we live in, especially regarding family life.  Today, traditional marriage is under attack.  Large families are criticized.  Sexuality is widely misunderstood.  Even the reality of male and female are being distorted.  The world would have us believe that the teachings of Jesus on marriage, family, and sexuality are strange and out-of-date.

These are the times we live in, and we must understand them for what they are.  Are we as a family intentional about battling the influence of our modern culture?  We cannot resign ourselves to being victims of the times.  We must act.  We should take great courage in the reality that the strongest influences (and consolations) for our children come from our home.  Do we talk together?  Are we spending enjoyable time together as a family?  How much?  When?  How can we do more?

As a family, pray a portion of the Rosary together (very short if children are young) reflecting on the Scripture passage above.(Optional: allow a brief time for discussion or questions from children concerning their thoughts and prayer.)

Reminder for Parents: Pier is just meant to be a jumping off point. The real goal is that you pray & eventually use the fruits of your personal prayer as the content of your family’s prayer. Duc in altum.
