Three Measures

Tuesday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time

Read this Gospel passage aloud to the family

Luke 13:18-21 Jesus said, "What is the Kingdom of God like?  To what can I compare it?  It is like a mustard seed that a man took and planted in the garden.  When it was fully grown, it became a large bush and the birds of the sky dwelt in its branches."
Again he said, "To what shall I compare the Kingdom of God?  It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch of dough was leavened."

(Parent) Reread this part a few times aloud

“To what shall I compare the Kingdom of God? It is like yeast…”

(Parent) Read this meditation aloud to the family

Have you ever seen the tiny amount of yeast that goes into a huge lump of bread dough?  This little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough.  Jesus uses this image of yeast leavening the dough to illustrate how a little good—or a little bad—can spread and influence a whole group.  It is so awesome to think how few and how strange the first Christians seemed in their beginnings.  Yet in a very short time they grew to influence the whole world!

We are good leaven for the world.  When Christians live intentionally in the world, the world will change for the better.  In a special way, Christian families make the world holy by giving an example of love and unity to a world that is so prone to selfishness and discord.  Pope John Paul II encouraged families to “become what you are,” to embrace the call to live a life of unity, of happiness, of love.  The witness of one little family, our family, joyfully giving and receiving love—that witness can change the world!

As a family, pray a portion of the Rosary together (very short if children are young) reflecting on the Scripture passage above.(Optional: allow a brief time for discussion or questions from children concerning their thoughts and prayer.)

Reminder for Parents: Pier is just meant to be a jumping off point. The real goal is that you pray & eventually use the fruits of your personal prayer as the content of your family’s prayer. Duc in altum.
