The Provision

Friday of the Twenty-Fourth Week in Ordinary Time

Read this Gospel passage aloud to the family

Luke 8:1-3 - Jesus journeyed from one town and village to another, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God.  Accompanying him were the Twelve and some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, Susanna, and many others who provided for them out of their resources.”

(Parent) Reread this part a few times aloud

“Accompanying him were…many others who provided for them out of their resources.”

(Parent) Read this meditation aloud to the family

Jesus’s public ministry was funded by the generosity of those who “provided” for Him and His apostles out of their resources.  Wow!  How many times have we passed by that line in reading Scripture?  Jesus is provided for!  What an honor for these people to provide for Christ, God Himself, who has no need of help!  If God has no need, then why is He being provided for?  God chose to arrange it this way, so that others might have the honor and the priceless merit of helping Him.

Jesus’ ministry, which ultimately accomplishes the salvation of the world, is advanced, in part, by people giving money and other resources. Do we give money and our resources to our parish or to Christian and human missions?  We must!  The Church is still carrying out the mission of Christ today.  We need to be generous in supporting it.  We need to cut back on unnecessary things (of which we all have many) and give more to our parish and to other important Christian missions.  Our money can help advance the mission of Christ and help save souls…or it can be wasted on unneeded comforts.  Be more generous.  Provide for the mission of Christ!

As a family, pray a portion of the Rosary together (very short if children are young) reflecting on the Scripture passage above. (Optional: allow a brief time for discussion or questions from children concerning their thoughts and prayer.)

Reminder for Parents: Pier is just meant to be a jumping off point. The real goal is that you pray & eventually use the fruits of your personal prayer as the content of your family’s prayer. Duc in altum.
