Sower

Wednesday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Read this Gospel passage aloud to the family

Matthew 13:1-9- On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore.  And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow.  And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up.  Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots.  Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it.  But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.  Whoever has ears ought to hear.”

“And He spoke to them at length in parables, saying:  ‘A sower went out to sow…’ ”

Look at how the sower spreads these seeds: he spreads them everywhere; he spreads them generously.  In the parable this sower represents God.  God spreads His word about the Kingdom of God everywhere, and for everyone.  But some people aren’t able to receive this message because their lives are closed off to it.  The problem is not with the sower (God), nor the seed (His message), but with some of the soil (the hearers of the message).

We are the hearers of God’s message that His Kingdom is at hand.  We are in charge of making our lives ready to receive this message.  We are in charge of the soil.  If we don’t take care of making our lives ready for God, we cannot expect this message to make a great difference in us.  In prayer, consider what we do to help open our lives to God.  Also, consider what harmful things we do that close our lives to God.

As a family, pray a portion of the Rosary together (very short if children are young) reflecting on the Scripture passage above. (Optional: allow a brief time for discussion or questions from children concerning their thoughts and prayer.)

Reminder for Parents: Pier is just meant to be a jumping off point. The real goal is that you pray & eventually use the fruits of your personal prayer as the content of your family’s prayer. Duc in altum.
