Prophets and Apostles

Thursday of the Twenty-Eighth Week in Ordinary Time

Read this Gospel passage aloud to the family

Luke 11:47-54   The Lord said: “Woe to you who build the memorials of the prophets whom your fathers killed.  Consequently, you bear witness and give consent to the deeds of your ancestors, for they killed them and you do the building.  Therefore, the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send to them prophets and Apostles; some of them they will kill and persecute’ in order that this generation might be charged with the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who died between the altar and the temple building.  Yes, I tell you, this generation will be charged with their blood!  Woe to you, scholars of the law!  You have taken away the key of knowledge.  You yourselves did not enter and you stopped those trying to enter.”  When he left, the scribes and Pharisees began to act with hostility toward him and to interrogate him about many things, for they were plotting to catch him at something he might say.

(Parent) Reread this part a few times aloud

God has always spoken to His people through representatives, through certain people whom He has chosen to spread His message. There are many examples of this in history and Scripture: Moses, the prophets, the apostles, St. Paul, to name just a few.  The Church that Jesus founded on the apostles still speaks God’s message.

God expects us to listen to the teachings of His Church.  He has harsh words for those who claim to be God’s people but aren’t willing to accept His messengers.  How well do we know the Church’s teachings?  Do we own a Catechism?  How well do we agree with the Church’s teachings?  Do we look deeply into our questions, searching for answers with honesty?  How well do we follow the Church’s teachings?  Do we need to face some issue with which we struggle?  These are important things for our lives.  And, obviously, these are very important things for Jesus.

As a family, pray a portion of the Rosary together (very short if children are young) reflecting on the Scripture passage above.(Optional: allow a brief time for discussion or questions from children concerning their thoughts and prayer.)

Reminder for Parents: Pier is just meant to be a jumping off point. The real goal is that you pray & eventually use the fruits of your personal prayer as the content of your family’s prayer. Duc in altum.
