Friday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time
Read this Gospel passage aloud to the family
Luke 14:1-6- On a sabbath he went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. In front of him there was a man suffering from dropsy. Jesus spoke to the scholars of the law and Pharisees in reply, asking, “Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath or not?” But they kept silent; so he took the man and, after he had healed him, dismissed him. Then he said to them, “Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern, would not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day?” But they were unable to answer his question.

“…they were unable to answer His question.”

The Gospel says that the Pharisees and the scholars of the law “were unable to answer” Jesus’ question. This wasn’t because they didn’t know the answer to Jesus’ question—they knew the answer, alright. This was because they didn’t like the answer to His question. The answer showed that they were wrong, and Jesus was right.
Jesus is always right. We are not. If ever we find ourselves disagreeing with the teachings of Jesus, we can know with certainty that we are the ones who are wrong. It isn’t always easy to obey God, especially when we don’t like what He is asking. But the saints listen and do what God wants, no matter what the cost. In what ways do we struggle to obey Jesus’ teachings? Have we ever asked God to help us to obey when it is difficult?
As a family, pray a portion of the Rosary together (very short if children are young) reflecting on the Scripture passage above.(Optional: allow a brief time for discussion or questions from children concerning their thoughts and prayer.)
Reminder for Parents: Pier is just meant to be a jumping off point. The real goal is that you pray & eventually use the fruits of your personal prayer as the content of your family’s prayer. Duc in altum.
