He Will Guide

Wednesday of the Sixth Week in Easter

Read this Gospel passage aloud to the family

John 16:12-15- Jesus said to his disciples: “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.  But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth.  He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming.  He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.  Everything that the Father has is mine;for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.”

(Parent)  Reread this part a few times aloud

“Everything that the Father has is mine.”

St. John’s writings give the most substantial teachings on the Holy Trinity.  Notice the things that Jesus says in this Gospel about the Three Persons of the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  First Jesus tells His disciples that the Holy Spirit “will take from what is mine and declare it to you.”  Then He tells them that “Everything that the Father has is mine.”  God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit share what they possess.  They share themselves.

Such a gift is called a “gift of self.”  Every person,  made in God’s image, is called to live this same way.  We are called to give ourselves to God and to others–not simply our money, our time, or our talents, plans, hopes, and preferences.  We are called to give our very selves.  When we hold back from giving, we cease to love.  Spouses can’t stop giving when they’re upset.  Parents can’t stop giving when they’re tired.  Siblings can’t stop giving when they’re bored.  We can’t stop giving.  When we cease to give, we cease to love.  During prayer, picture Christ on the Cross.  When did He stop giving?  He is our model.

As a family, pray a portion of the Rosary together (very short if children are young) reflecting on the Scripture passage above. (Optional: allow a brief time for discussion or questions from children concerning their thoughts and prayer.)

Reminder for Parents: Pier is just meant to be a jumping off point. The real goal is that you pray & eventually use the fruits of your personal prayer as the content of your family’s prayer. Duc in altum.
