Greatly Misled

Read this Gospel passage aloud to the family
Mark 12: 18-27 - Some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and put this question to him, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us, If someone’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no child, his brother must take the wife and raise up descendants for his brother. Now there were seven brothers. The first married a woman and died, leaving no descendants. So the second brother married her and died, leaving no descendants, and the third likewise. And the seven left no descendants. Last of all the woman also died. At the resurrection when they arise whose wife will she be? For all seven had been married to her.” Jesus said to them, “Are you not misled because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? When they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but they are like the angels in heaven. As for the dead being raised, have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God told him, I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not God of the dead but of the living. You are greatly misled.”

Here is a line that should strike home for many people. Jesus is speaking to the Sadducees and says to them that they are misled because they don’t “know the Scriptures or the power of God.” The Sadducees were one of the three major Jewish groups of Jesus’ day, and they held a great deal of authority and power—especially in the Temple. Among their many mistakes, they did not believe in the resurrection of the dead.
Jesus makes an important point here that if we are ignorant of Scripture, we will be ignorant of life. How many Christians make terrible decisions regarding marriage, politics, morality, entertainment, and sexuality. They make life-decisions that negatively affect their very souls because they don’t know, or don’t believe, the Scriptures. Those who teach that Scripture is outdated, or is untrue, or is a nice book of suggestions, are in disagreement with Jesus. We too will be ignorant of how to live unless we listen to God in Scripture, and always stay open to His power in our lives.
As a family, pray a portion of the Rosary together (very short if children are young) reflecting on the Scripture passage above. (Optional: allow a brief time for discussion or questions from children concerning their thoughts and prayer.)
Reminder for Parents: Pier is just meant to be a jumping off point. The real goal is that you pray & eventually use the fruits of your personal prayer as the content of your family’s prayer. Duc in altum.
