Come, Holy Spirit!

Pentecost Sunday – Mass During the Day (C)

John 14:15-26 - Jesus said to his disciples: "If you love me, you will keep my commandments.  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always.

"Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him.  Those who do not love me do not keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me.

"I have told you this while I am with you.  The Advocate, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you."

Today is the wonderful event of Pentecost.  It marks the end of the Easter season and the return to Ordinary Time.  But the new reality that Pentecost brings to the disciples of Jesus, reminds us that we are not merely in an ordinary time, but an extraordinary time.  Pentecost was already a feast of the Jews, which is why there were Jews from so many parts of the world gathered in Jerusalem for the Pentecost event we know of from the Book of the Acts of the Apostles.  For the Jews it was a feast of the beginning of grain harvest and also commemorated God’s giving of the Law to Moses.  But the feast finds its fulfillment in God’s giving of the Holy Spirit.

Pentecost comes fifty days after the Resurrection of Jesus and ten days after the Ascension.  The events all belong together.  Of course, Christ’s Death and Resurrection are the highest events in our Christian faith, but while they bring about our salvation and our ultimate victory, they don’t bring about in us the power to go live like Christ and change the world.  For example, look at the Apostles after the Resurrection.  They had witnessed Christ alive in the Flesh after His death, and yet they didn’t have direction, power, influence in the world.  But after Pentecost, after the coming of the Holy Spirit upon them in power, these men go out boldly and change the world.  God had been with them, but after the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, God was in them.  And God is not simply with us; God is in us!

As a family, pray a portion of the Rosary together (very short if children are young) reflecting on the Scripture passage above. (Optional: allow a brief time for discussion or questions from children concerning their thoughts and prayer.)

Reminder for Parents: Pier is just meant to be a jumping off point. The real goal is that you pray & eventually use the fruits of your personal prayer as the content of your family’s prayer. Duc in altum.
