Tuesday of the First Week of Advent

Read this Gospel passage aloud to the family

Luke 10:21-24 Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.  All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him." Turning to the disciples in private he said, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I say to you, many prophets and kings desired to see what you  see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it."

We Catholics are so blessed!  Many people (even “prophets and kings”) have longed to see what we see, and to hear what we hear.  People have deeply longed to hear: “you are forgiven” (like we can in Confession), or to hear a clear teaching on what is right and wrong (like we can from the pope and the Church’s magisterium), or to hear an answer to the mystery of suffering (like we can from the Cross)!   Many people have longed to see Christ’s flesh (like we can in the Eucharist), or to see people who are truly good (like we can in the saints), or to see an institution last (like we can in our 2,000-year Church history)!  We have what others don’t have.

We must not take our Catholic Faith for granted.  It is a gift—one of our very greatest ones!  We must use it well!

As a family, pray a portion of the Rosary together (very short if children are young) reflecting on the Scripture passage above. (Optional: allow a brief time for discussion or questions from children concerning their thoughts and prayer.)
